David Seamands on Distorted Images
Tonight at Logan Uniting we looked at recovery from distorted images of God. I started with three TV adverts:
Telecom NZ “Father and Son”
Gibson “Quiz”
Ace Hardware “Dad”
We took a look at David Seamand’s thoughts on the connection between family patterns and our understanding of God.
Most of us developed our concepts and feelings about our heavenly Father from our earthly mothers and fathers, and these feelings become intertwined and confused. But the guilty and contradictory feelings are not the voice of God. They are often the continuing voice of Mother or Dad or Brother or Sister, or something internalized that puts pressure on us.
We explored two of the distorted images of God outlined in Juanita and Dale Ryan’s study, using Psalm 103 and Hebrews 4 to explore healthy images of the compassionate God we follow.
