Geoff Bullock online at Signposts

Geoff BullockGeoff Bullock’s been engaging with some very interesting blog conversation over at Signposts this last week. Phil and Dan are posting updated lyrics for Geoff’s earlier songs, lyrics that reflect his changes in theology since leaving Hillsong. Some of Geoff’s comments are raw but there’s a grace that flows through them all. Also of interest is the Sight Magazine interview with Geoff published this time last year.

This Sunday night at Logan Uniting I’m looking at the healing of our distorted images of God. I daresay there are a few distortions that come from the assumptions developed in church cultures, including Hillsong. More on that later.

Geoff Bullock Rewrites His Songs

Friday, August 26th, 2005

Phil at Signposts has started a series on Geoff Bullock’s rewritten songs. Today’s post is “Have Faith In God”, developed originally for Hillsong. Tim of Established and Emerging comments on the dynamic back in 1993 that led Geoff to change the words to suit the faith focus of Hillsong. Anyway, Geoff is a lot freer now to focus on grace.

I’ve used Bullock’s updated lyrics a few times. At first there are a few puzzled looks as people discover that their favourite songs have morphed. But then the words start to have their impact.

Have faith in God
Let your hope rest on
His grace that’s sufficient for all.
Always assured
Forever secure
In His grace that’s sufficient for all

Jeff Crabtree about to blog

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

I see that Jeff Crabtree’s primed to start posting at Phil Baker and Friends. Excellent!

Jeff CrabtreeI came across Jeff at Parachute Festival in Matamata, New Zealand back in the mid 1990s, where I interviewed him and Geoff Bullock for a magazine article. And then saw him again at the NZ Christian songwriter’s conference in Upper Hutt. I still remember Jeff talking about people who bring him their awful songs that “God has given them”. The cutting but humorous response: “You know why God gave you that song? Because God didn’t want it!” A response Dicko of Australian Idol would have been proud of.

Jeff’s laid back irreverent approach to life and spirituality can be found in his 1995 album, “Dr Bob and the Amazing Disciples of Groove - The Doctor Is In”. My favourite track: “All I want”.

Jeff is the Principal of the Christian City Church School of Creative Arts in Sydney.
